Open Door Mission has developed a collaboration with the Harris County Hospital District to operate a fully equipped health clinic eight hours a day, five days a week. Nurses staff the clinic, and refer men to physicians and hospitals when necessary.

Without the Health Clinic, men from the streets would be left without access to health care. Every Houstonian’s health is improved by the Health Clinic’s campaign to control the spread of communicable diseases such as influenza, tuberculosis, hepatitis and HIV. The screening for medical conditions like malnutrition, diabetes, and heart disease leads to early detection and treatment, saving local taxpayers millions in medical costs each year.

Mental health screenings and referrals done at the clinic also reduce the number of men living on our streets because of undiagnosed mental illnesses like manic depression, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
