Open Door Mission’s Education Department assists students with their continuing education in a variety of important ways. The program is often the stepping-stone for those interested in pursuing post-secondary education. Adult Basic Education (ABE), levels I, II & III assists adult students who would like to improve their reading, writing and math skills and to obtain a 12 th grade equivalency diploma (GED). The department provides a framework for program excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement in adult education. Success is measured through reports, Pre/Post TABE (Texas Adult Basic Education) complete battery, and BEST (Basic English Skills Test) testing. In addition, we assist students with the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online for workplace readiness skills and/or a four year degree. The program evaluates students daily, based on established principles.
On average, approximately 60 men a day receive some type of educational assistance in the Mission’s Education Department. Some of the highlights:
- Educational Gains -- About 90% of the students completed one or more educational levels this quarter. We had several students who made tremendous grade gains towards their GED diploma and Reading literacy classes. Two ESL (English as a Second Language) students graduated ESL I. In 2005, nine of our students passed the GED.

- Educational Outcomes -- Students who advance in the instructional program by meeting core performance are measured in three areas -- advancing within their instructional program, signing up for post-secondary education and/or training, or applying for third party financial assistance to further their education.
- Individualized Curriculum -- Program curriculum and instruction is geared to individual needs and learning styles based on current requirements and practice. We continue Post-testing using state approved instruments.
- Community Involvement -- We regularly invite people from the community to help in one-on-one tutoring and in identifying learners’ needs for support services.
- Technology -- We offer formal classes in the most popular business software applications; such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet access.

- Spanish and Resumes -- Students are prepared for today’s workplace with Spanish lessons 3 times a week. They are also taught how to prepare resumes, cover letters, and how to succeed in job interviews.
In addition, the Education Department offers certifications from Houston Community College in auto mechanics, culinary arts, food service, plumbing, landscaping, and maintenance. In addition, participants in the program learn how to formulate budgets and financial plans and are taught the importance of saving money prior to leaving the Mission.
