The Russell M. Scott, Jr., M.D. Convalescent Care Center at Open Door Mission is the largest free respite care facility in the Houston area.

These men suffer from serious, chronic medical conditions and are often recently released from area hospitals after surgery and accidents. They typically have nowhere to go, and nobody to care for them. At the Mission, each man is provided with a hospital bed, and visiting nurses from the Harris County Hospital District come to tend to their medical needs.

The Russell M. Scott, Jr., M.D. Convalescent Care Center provides health maintenance, transportation, spiritual counseling, legal assistance with disability claims, effective mentoring, and housing referrals.

Every day, Open Door Mission receives calls inquiring about the availability of beds from organizations such as: Veterans Administration, LBJ Hospital, Ben Taub, Methodist Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Christus St. Joseph’s Hospital, Star of Hope Mission, Harbor Light Center and others.

In the Russell M. Scott, Jr., M.D. Convalescent Care Center, we serve men suffering from a broad range of chronic medical conditions; for instance, amputations, diabetes, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, fractures, and cancer. We offer men with these conditions a chance to heal, and eventually to become productive members of our community.
