Allen’s dad died when he was just a baby, leaving behind six sons for Allen’s mother to raise alone. Fortunately his grandma was willing to help, and took Allen and two brothers into her home. “I was very happy,” he says. But in high school, he began to flounder. “I dropped out of school in 9th grade,” he says. Soon he was drinking, smoking marijuana and “hanging around with street thugs.”
