Open Door Mission Offers Free Classes
Recovery and Homeless Shelter Helps Houstonians without High School Diploma pass GED Tests
August 28, 2007 --- Houston, Texas --- Open Door Mission has announced plans to offer classes to the general public to prepare students to pass the GED Tests, or General Educational Development Tests. When passed, the test certifies that the student has attained high-school level academic skills. The test is widely accepted by colleges, corporations, and other institutions.
Open Door Mission will offer the classes completely free of charge to students who are otherwise unable to pay a fee for the classes.
In addition, the classes will be “Open,” meaning that a student can join the classes at any time, making it much more convenient for the students. The vast majority of GED classes in the Houston area are offered on a “Closed” basis.
“We’re thrilled to be able to offer these classes,” said Rick Hill, Executive Director of Open Door Mission. “The U.S. Census Bureau reported that almost 30% of adults over 25 years of age in Houston don’t have a high school diploma or a GED. In the workplace this translates directly to lower wages, and less of a chance for promotion. There’s obviously a big need in Houston.”
“We’ve offered GED classes for almost 7 years for residents of Open Door Mission,” added Curtis Lovett, Director of Programs. “Our instructors have solid experience in helping students to succeed in GED programs. At the Mission, we have a history of giving back to the community. We think providing people the opportunity to succeed is one of the best ways we can give back to a community that has been so generous to us over the years.”
