Admission to the Alan & Ann Craft DoorWay Drug/Alcohol Recovery Program

Eligibility Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Male
  • History of substance abuse
  • Desire and attitude conducive to change
  • 5th grade reading level (English)
  • Ability to obtain a Texas ID


Ineligible Applicants

  • Active (untreated) communicable disease
  • Unable to perform self-care
  • Active felony warrants
  • High-risk psychiatric medications, such as benzodiazepines or opioid maintenance.
  • Serious psychiatric diagnosis
  • Moderate to severe mental retardation
  • Severe cognitive deficits/dementia
  • Recent evidence of uncontrolled violent behavior
  • Fugitive
  • Registered sex offender
  • Individuals restricted by Open Door Mission


Admission Process

  • Type: Interview
  • Times: Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30am-10:00am, first come first served

    (It is not required, but a phone call to the DoorWay Program Intake Counselor is recommended before coming, 713-921-7520 ext. 242.)

Admission to the Russell M. Scott, Jr., M.D. Convalescent Care Center

Eligibility Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Homeless males
  • Non-acute, short-term (90 days), convalescing medical conditions
  • Self-care (includes ADLs, injections, and management of bodily functions)
  • Independent in mobility
  • Able to establish personal identification


Ineligible Applicants

  • Active (untreated) communicable disease
  • Unable to perform self-care
  • Active (untreated) psychiatric illness
  • Moderate to severe mental retardation
  • Severe cognitive deficits/dementia
  • Recent evidence of uncontrolled violent behavior
  • Fugitive
  • Registered sex offender
  • Individuals restricted by Open Door Mission
  • Terminal care patients


Admission Process

  • Type: Referrals from hospitals, only

To Refer:

1. Print and complete the referral form

2. Fax the completed referral form and medical records to 713-923-8743

3. Contact Social Services Director at 713-921-7520 ext. 219 or ext. 220 regarding the referral at least 24 hours in advance of the anticipated dis-charge date

  • Times: Referrals, Monday through Friday, 8am – 5pm. Patient admission, Monday through Friday, before 4pm (no weekend or after hour admissions)

Admission to the Education Center

Eligibility Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • 5th grade reading level


Ineligible Applicants

  • Recent evidence of uncontrolled violent behavior
  • Fugitive
  • Registered sex offender
  • Individuals restricted by Open Door Mission


Admission Process

  • Type: Written test (reading, language, and math)
  • Times: Tuesday/Thursday 9am to 11:30am or 6:30pm to 9pm
    Please be punctual, as these are time tests. If a prospective student is late, they will
    not be allowed to test at that time. Prospective students must also bring a valid Texas
    driver's liscense or Texas identification card.
