Our impact

Our Mission

Every man who walks through our doors carries a story. We exist to walk alongside him — with faith, with honesty, and with the long view in mind.

Open Door Houston is a Christ-Centered Refuge for Men in Crisis

This is what guides every conversation, every program, and every dollar we steward on behalf of the men we serve.

Our Mission

Open Door Houston is a Christ-centered refuge for men in crisis. We extend help by meeting urgent needs, provide healing through holistic care and authentic community, and offer hope through restoration and second chances as we walk with each person toward freedom and renewed purpose.

Our Vision

We envision a Houston where every person in crisis finds help, healing, and hope where no one is left alone, and where renewed lives and families strengthen our community. As Scripture reminds us, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Cor 5:17)

Our Intentional Approach

We don't manage caseloads. We build real relationships. Staff walk alongside each man personally — learning his history, his barriers, and his goals — because lasting change is relational, not transactional.

Administration

Our administrative team keeps the mission operational — managing resources, partnerships, and compliance so that program staff can stay focused on the men they serve.

Chapel

Biblical principles don't replace clinical best practices at Open Door. They work together. We bring Scripture and evidence-based approaches into the same room because men deserve both the truth and the tools.

Education

Life skills, job readiness, financial literacy — practical training that gives men the tools to stay on their feet once they leave our program.

“Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.”

Ephesians 3:17 (NLT)

Our Story

History of Open Door Mission

What began as a modest downtown shelter has grown into a comprehensive campus offering emergency shelter, meals, long-term addiction recovery programs, healthcare, vocational training, and transitional housing. Through every season of growth, the Mission has held to one unwavering belief: every individual deserves the chance to rebuild their life.

Open Door Mission's impact is made possible by dedicated staff, faithful volunteers, and a generous Houston community of churches, businesses, and individuals. Working alongside local organizations and agencies, the Mission addresses the root causes of homelessness and addiction — and its commitment doesn't end at graduation. With continued education, career guidance, healthcare, and aftercare support, Open Door Mission walks with every client on the long road to lasting self-sufficiency.

The Early Days

Founded in 1954 in downtown Houston, Open Door Mission began as a place of shelter, food, and hope for the city's homeless. Its founders, driven by deep faith and a strong sense of social responsibility, envisioned a true "open door" — a place where anyone struggling could find refuge and assistance without judgment or discrimination.
