Support For Men
Doorway Recovery Program
Real recovery doesn't happen in thirty days. Doorway gives you the time, structure, and support to rebuild from the ground up.
The Doorway Program
Providing Life-Changing Services to Men Struggling with Addiction & Homelessness
Doorway is Open Door Mission's long-term residential recovery program for men in Houston who are ready to leave homelessness and addiction behind for good. This isn't a quick fix or a short stay. It's a structured, Christ-centered journey — built around job training, licensed counseling, spiritual growth, and a community of men committed to real change. Men who complete Doorway leave with a career, not just a job. A support network, not just a bed. Shelter here is part of the program: men live on-site while they do the work. If you're ready to take that step, the application is open.
Our Intentional Approach
We don't manage caseloads. We build real relationships. Staff walk alongside each man personally — learning his history, his barriers, and his goals — because lasting change is relational, not transactional.
Administration
Our administrative team keeps the mission operational — managing resources, partnerships, and compliance so that program staff can stay focused on the men they serve.
Chapel
Biblical principles don't replace clinical best practices at Open Door. They work together. We bring Scripture and evidence-based approaches into the same room because men deserve both the truth and the tools.
Education
Life skills, job readiness, financial literacy — practical training that gives men the tools to stay on their feet once they leave our program.
Job Training
Education & Job Training
A meaningful career starts with real skills. In Doorway's job training component, men earn vocational credentials, build practical life skills, and connect with employers who are serious about hiring. We don't hand anyone a diploma and call it done. We walk with each man through the process — GED preparation, industry-specific training, resume work, interview coaching — until he's ready to walk into a job he can actually build on.
Counseling
Mental Health & Counseling
Addiction and homelessness are rarely the whole story. Trauma, grief, broken relationships, and mental health challenges often run underneath. Doorway provides access to licensed counselors who understand that. Men receive individual and group counseling grounded in evidence-based approaches — professional, confidential support that takes the whole person seriously. For families and referring agencies: clinical care is built into the program, not bolted on.
Spiritual Development
Spiritual Development
Everything at Open Door Mission flows from one conviction: lasting change is a spiritual matter. Chapel, discipleship groups, and one-on-one mentorship aren't extras in Doorway — they're the foundation. Men hear the Gospel. They wrestle with it. They find in it something no program alone can give: a reason to change, a source of strength, and a community of brothers who take their faith seriously. We don't require a man to arrive with faith. We do invite him to encounter it.
Transitional Living
Transitional Living
Completing the core program is a milestone, not a finish line. Transitional living is the next stage built into Doorway — on-site housing that gives men the time and structure to apply what they've learned while they stabilize employment, save income, and prepare to move into housing they sustain on their own. It's not indefinite. It's intentional. Men leave when they're genuinely ready, not when the clock runs out.
Family Support
Family Support
If you're a family member researching this page, you already know the cost of watching someone you love struggle. Doorway doesn't just work on the man in the program — it works toward restoring the relationships that addiction and homelessness have strained. We provide family communication support and guidance for loved ones who want to understand the process and stay connected in healthy ways. Recovery is hard. Families don't have to navigate it alone either.
Help Support Us
Serving Opportunities
One of the most powerful shifts in recovery is moving from receiving help to giving it. Men in Doorway serve alongside volunteers in the daily work of the mission — preparing meals, maintaining facilities, supporting operations. It's purposeful, not punitive. Serving builds accountability, restores dignity, and reminds every man in the program that he has something to offer. Want to serve alongside them? The Volunteer page has everything you need.
